Staten Island
About Staten Island
Located in the southwest portion of New York City is the borough of Staten Island. With a total of 102.5 square miles it is the third largest borough and the least populated. The highest point of elevation on the island is 410 feet at the top of Todt Hill. Not only is it the highest elevation point of all five boroughs, it is also the highest elevation of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Staten Island has plenty of historical sites as well as many attractions. One main attraction is the Staten Island Zoo, which opened in the summer of 1936. This was the first zoo that was specifically dedicated to an educational mandate in the United States. Staten Island is also the home of one of the most extensive Himalayan artifact collections in the country. This collection can be seen at the Jacques Marchais Museum Of Tibetan Art that officially opened in 1947. Along with the many historical sites, Staten Island has been called home to many celebrities. Some of the more well known people that have lived here are Alyssa Milano, Steven Seagal, Rick Shroder and Martin Sheen. Several blockbuster movies have been filmed on the Island, including The Godfather, Good Fellas, Working Girl, and Scent Of A Woman. The wildly popular television drama series, Law And Order, is also partially filmed here. The show Grounded For Life was set in Staten Island, but not filmed locally. Staten Island, New York is a wonderful travel spot to take advantage of for any type of vacation.
