Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber celebrates twenty years of one-of-a-kind performances.

Event Details

Entitled NOTHING IS: How Sun Ra, Amiri Baraka, and Octavia Butler Supercharged the Black Arts With Post-Apocalyptic Cosmic Consciousness, the evening opens with Black Power anthems in conjunction with our special exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power and closes with an experimental set.

Performers include Greg Tate (conduction, guitar, laptop), Carl Hancock Rux (vocals, spoken word), Mikel Banks (vocals, conduction), Shelley Nicole (vocals), Julie Brown (vocals), Mazz Swift (violin, vocals), Julia Kent (cello), V. Jeffrey Smith (tenor saxophone, effects), Vijay Iyer (acoustic piano, electronics), Leon Gruenbaum (keyboards, samchillian), André Lassalle (guitar), Ben Tyree (guitar), Jared Michael Nickerson (electric bass), and LaFrae Sci (trap drums). The concert is followed by a discussion with the musicians moderated by Greg Tate.
