The I-Collective Presents A Pop-Up Indigenous Harvest Gathering in Manhattan NYC Thanksgiving is arguably the most recognizable holiday in the United States, yet the common stereotypes and historical narrative are often unchallenged.

Event Details

From public schools playing Pilgrims and Indians to erase the genocide that created the American holiday, to reenactments of the First Thanksgiving that imply indigenous people are relics of the past, we see widespread, harmful misinformation about Indigenous foods and peoples on a day that ostensibly celebrates the spirit of indigenous and European cooperation for a bountiful harvest.

This year the I-Collective is organizing a week of events during the Thanksgiving holiday to draw attention to indigenous issues with Thanksgiving as the impetus. Indigenous cuisine is not merely stereotypical turkeys and corn at the Pilgrims’ table; this year, indigenous chefs combine ancestral knowledge with modern techniques to create thoughtful dishes to share with New York City, an internationally recognized culinary scene that has yet to experience our foodways.

The I-Collective stands for four principles: ​indigenous, inspired, innovative, ​and​ independent​. An autonomous group of indigenous chefs, activists, herbalists, seed, and knowledge keepers, the I-Collective strives to open a dialogue and create a new narrative that highlights not only historical indigenous contributions, but also promotes our community’s resiliency and innovations in gastronomy, agriculture, the arts, and society at large.
The I-Collective is honored to feature several events during the week. Chefs from across the nation will create dishes highlighting precolonial traditions. The I-Collective will also host a community panel discussion on food sovereignty and economic justice.
Across Turtle Island (North, Central, and South America), Thanksgiving is not a singular event but rather a regular gathering of appreciation for changing seasons that presents the opportunity to renew our sacred connections to the land and each other.
