Victims of teen dating violence will tell their stories of trauma and recovery at a City Hall news conference. A featured speaker will be April Hernandez, a Bronx-born, Screen Actors Guild Award nominated actress who won acclaim in the film Freedom Writers and the television series Dexter. Ms. Hernandez is herself a victim of teen dating abuse and is a spokesperson with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in four teens will be a victim of dating violence and 40% of girls ages 14-17 say they personally know someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend.
This is the 3rd annual walk-a-thon sponsored by The Healing Center – a not-for-profit, community-based agency dedicated to the intervention and prevention of family violence and abuse, serving people of diverse faiths, cultures and personal experiences. Our goal is to empower families to live safe and healthy lives.
